In the late 1990's, most of the State Trust Land in north Scottsdale was
recommended for possible inclusion in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
Despite the wishes of citizens, the areas near Pima Road were not ultimately included.
However, the City of Scottsdale is still collecting the citizen-approved preserve tax, and money is available to purchase more land. What's needed is the political will from the Scottsdale City Council to acquire strategic areas that could protect scenic vistas along Pima Road and allow for easier public access to the trail system.
There would also be significant economic benefits. Scottsdale’s identity and appeal are closely tied to its desert landscape. Tourism, real estate values, and the overall quality of life are all enhanced by access to scenic open space. Developments adjacent to preserved land often command higher property values, and the city’s reputation as a place that balances growth with conservation attracts both residents and businesses. In this sense, open space is not land taken out of economic use—it is an asset that supports long-term economic vitality.
