This page gives an overview of Scottsdale's zoning classifications, with links to the details for each one. In North Scottsdale, most land is zoned for Single Family Residential, or "R1". The different types of R1 zoning are labeled based on the minimum lot size allowed, in thousands of square feet. For example, "R1-43" implies a minimum lot size of 43,000 square feet, or approximately one acre.
You will also see "R" zoning, which includes multifamily and resort uses. For example, "R-4" is "Townhouse Residential;" "R-4R" is "Resort/Townhouse Residential" which is similar to R-4 but allows for resort uses such as meal service.
"COS" zoning indicates Conservation Open Space, which is intended to protect significant natural and visual resources from development.
The City of Scottsdale provides an interactive map of Parcel Information, where you can see the zoning for any given parcel by clicking on it. (You need to zoom in to a fairly detailed level before this feature will work.) The adjacent screenshot shows the result of clicking on the parcel of State Trust Land at the southeast corner of Pima and Stagecoach Pass - it is zoned R1-18 ESL. "ESL" stands for Environmentally Sensitive Lands, which is an overlay zoning district intended to preserve the rural desert character in certain areas.
The Scottsdale General Plan is also intended to guide land use decisions on a broader scale.

Remaining State Trust land in north Scottsdale is outlined in red.
This map reflects the rezoning that was initiated by the Arizona State Land Department in 2014 and approved by the Scottsdale City Council in 2016.
Most of the green area in the upper right corner of the map is part of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
Note that this PDF has a second page with details on each area.
